FAQs
Why are you holding this event in August?
The event marks 50 years of hip-hop’s artistry, innovation, and global transcendence.
Is there adequate security staff for this event?
We coordinated with Washington, DC's Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Park Police and Smithsonian Office of Protection Services to ensure adequate security staff is present at the event and proper safety measures are accounted for.
Why do I have to go through screening?
To maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone, we are screening all attendees as a precautionary measure.
Why do DC residents need passes to this event? Why weren’t passes set aside especially for DC residents?
Passes to the block party were free and available to the general public through our website.
Can I leave and re-enter?
Visitors can leave and return at will. However, we highly encourage attendees to stay in the event area to avoid extended wait times. Visitors will request passes for an entry block (4 hours), but the passes will allow them to stay all day.
Will there be shade/resting spots outside?
Given our limited space and the need to make sure attendees have a safe and enjoyable experience, we had to limit tented areas. However, cooling stations will be located across the campus.
Are local performers included in the lineup?
During the daytime session, we have a DMV showcase that spotlights several local acts. Additionally, our host is a local radio personality. We also have a DMV radio station live broadcasting throughout the day. We want to highlight hip-hop's broad cultural impact by showcasing artists from around the country including the DMV area.
Will there be a Hip Hop Block Party Next Year?
Currently, there are no plans to have a Hip-Hop Block Party in 2024. However, we are exploring additional Block Party concepts and ways for our larger NMAAHC community to celebrate African American history and culture together.
